Stretched pictures anyone? I may have a cure!

I have had a total nightmare with pictures looking all stretched and messy on my blog. I’ve looked everywhere for a solution but no luck. Now, I think I may at last have an answer. So if there are any other bloggers having the same trouble, maybe this will help you too.

Some pictures are fine, days will pass, etc. But my last post screwed up every picture on it. Deleting and reinserting, deleting and re-uploading, even trying different Themes did nothing to help.

If you insert a picture into a post and then the post preview, or the published post, shows the pictured as a stretched greyed mess try this.

Screen Shot 2013-01-19 at 23.49.21

In the visual editor, click on the picture so you get these icons. Click on the ‘landscape picture’ icon on the left. This takes you to the picture editor.

In the editor is an advanced tab. Click on this and you get more options.

One of these options will be CSS CLASS, which will have some stuff in it. Delete the contents of this field.

Now save the picture. If you come back to this Advanced Settings screen, it will have put a much simpler tag in the CSS field (e.g. alignleft).

The picture should now look okay on your page.

I really hope this works for you, as the stretchy pic thing drove me nuts.

For the technical people – I think what is happening is the CSS class is trying to make the picture the full width of the post, instead of the full width of the actual picture.

If you can think of a better technical reason, let me know as I’d like to find out for sure.

Happy blogging ๐Ÿ˜€

  1. I haven’t had the issue you mention but haven’t been real fond of the changes WP made to the media uploader. Thanks for the tip…will keep it in mind should I run into trouble down the road!

  2. Thanks! ๐Ÿ™‚
I try to get in there and experiment some and hope I don’t break the whole thing. I do use the border feature but have not done the align.

I try to make my pages attractive but then think……does anybody really notice or care? lol
But it is important to me and sometimes I’m the only one who reads my page. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

  3. Hey Panda! I’ve had a lot of trouble with pictures coming out all wrong too! I found that you can change the width & height under Advanced Settings.

I get to that page the same way you explained, and when I’m in the edit part, I also change the visibility from *public* to *private* so I can play with the image without worrying that someone will see it’s constant transformation! ๐Ÿ™‚ Which would probably be very entertaining, actually…

When I’m done, I switch back to public.

    1. Thanks for the tip Gabriela.
I will try it out, though I’m finding pics look different in different browsers. Very annoying as the cartoons are my favourite thing!

  4. Wow. An IT explanation I can follow. You are very good at this. I want to go bugger up a picture so I can fix it. I think I’ll go get into the advanced setting and just look around. This makes me braver to try it. That alone is frightening. Good job.

PS how do you make your cartoons and put them in your blog? (if there’s a simple/short explanation). It could be fun to do the Panda thing and add the occasional cartoon. Unless aliens do it for you.

    1. I think you have to wait for pictures to bugger themselves! I still get problems with them…grr.
I draw my pics on Illustrator – although you could use anything (artscape / gimp – are free) – then save it as a .PNG file (B/W) or .JPG (Colour). Insert Image in WordPress and drag the pic onto the page – job’s a goodun!

You can tell me anything (yes, even that!)
