Lower Mammals – A Poem

What separates us from animals
Is not our intellect or use of tools
It’s our ability to believe
What isn’t true

When a bear loses a cub
It will not wear conspicuous black
Even as it looks at other cubs
With contempt

The world is insane and I'm in writing therapy!

  1. I like this… I think the idea has so much depth and potential “It’s our ability to believe What isn’t true”

you kept it short and sweet but I feel that it has room to really be explored… would you consider writing a longer version? (but do keep this one in tact…) really exploring the depth of the idea? maybe make it in to one of your poetry prompts and see where it goes??? 🙂 just saying…

  2. No, it will not. If the bear did not see what happened to its own cub directly, though, it will call out to it constantly and inconsolably, just like we do (but in our own minds, and silently).

    • oh Susan that is so true… and for some reason reminds me of elephants and how they will visit sites with elephant bones and spend time feeling the bones and what appears to be just mourning (but who knows what is going on those big ol’ heads really?) hhhmmmm… well if that wasn’t a complete ramble I don’t know what is….

  3. Do I hear poets discussing bears? 🙂

  5. Wow. Beautifully done, RoS.

Somehow this question of what separate us from animals pop into my mind just last night before I fall asleep. The trigger was because I was reflecting the news report of a lady in India who was raped and tortured by 6 men and eventually died from her injuries.

Of course this topic really bother me and I had a hard time falling asleep after that.

You can tell me anything (yes, even that!)
