Dying to Live – A Poem (response to Antonym Prompt)

Written in response to this prompt.

** UPDATE: I’m part of a little collective of poets who have kindly critiqued this poem, the original is below and the re-write is the top one. **

Funeral processions flow
The hearse hiss of tyres gentle kiss
stately roll
An end we live to escape
or ignore
Inevitable peace we thought
we would never know

Then driven by this quietude
we are sparked to dark parts
of body and heart in heat

Which leads to an increase
fortified and weak
Slow on bloated feet
People in uniform clutter
contraction engines scream
and blood smatters linen skirts
in the battle of giving birth

Here’s the first draft:

Funeral processions flow
the hearse hiss of tyres gentle kiss
stately roll
An end we live to escape
or ignore
has a serenity we would have given
our whole lives for

Irony then
that the emblem of ultimate
romance and peace

Requires first an increase
of provisions, fortifying
the home position
People in uniform clutter
as contraction engines scream
and blood coats a mothers skirts
in the battle of giving birth
