Not me – A Poem

I shower first,
Shave my legs
Dry off
Then apply some moisturising
Foundation cream,
A little blusher, eyeliner
False lashes and lipstick,
I notice my Botox is softening
Tie my dyed hair up
Pop my chicken fillets in
To give my modest birthright
Some cleavage
Blouse, skirt, tights
Slip into my heels
And set off for the doctors

“What seems to be the problem?”
He asks.
And I reply,
“I just don’t feel myself lately.”

On my way home
I pass full lips
Perfect tits
Emulsion teeth
Flawless hips
On magazines
Billboard Whoredings
Bus sidings
TV screens
The sculpted dreams
Of endless regimes
In gyms
Working ceaselessly
Counting every calorie
Yet posed to look
Like everything
The unblemished skin
Glossy hair
and flat belly
Are effortless

And so it’s me
Who has not achieved

But all of this is done
In such a way
That when I get home
Each day
I can’t understand
Why I am crying

This is so just like you.
    You need a hug

  2. OUCH. You’ve hit it on the head here. Perfectly.

  3. jaschmehl says:

I can’t identify with this one. No, not at all.

  4. warmginger says:

Hear hear! The vapid crap that’s shoved down women’s throats by the ‘women’s and lifestyle’ section of the media makes me SO angry. Why on earth do they expect us to give a flying-f***? To be avoided if you want to be happy in your own skin.

  5. I like the line
‘I just don’t feel myself lately.’
The way it’s used is very poignant

You can tell me anything (yes, even that!)
