Poem Called – See What You Want (for Susan Daniels Project)

We dig the soil
and invent the value of gold
and oil

Plunge the seas
find a place to excrete
and fish to eat

Fell trees to create benches
where we can sit
to catch our breath

We look
look closer
look right in

But see only our own seeing
create patterns
which fulfil our greeds

Predicated on self deceit
society lives in it’s steel and glass retreat
leaving it’s heart on the ground beneath

Can we be surprised then
that a group of self-elected men
award themselves other peoples children

Clothe them in a tapestry of legitimacy
through policy and legality
as if they had not written these things

Their untamed animality
named as the will of a God
as if they had not written these things

To maintain what they call civilised
their shrivelled eyes
refuse the sight

Of their own brutality
but the children they won’t see
pay the price

  1. As we go about the business of experiencing a life filled with ‘paradoxical contradictions,’ we choose one over another . . . perpetual tradeoffs, driving ourselves insane with the seemingly infinite questions of which are good and right and which are bad and wrong. Thanks for the brilliant illustration and for the exercise in thought. ~G

    1. Thank you for the thoughtful response.
Perhaps I’m just a cynic, but I think we know very well what is right most of the time. The real trade off is between easy and hard work, personal effort and comfort, personal pain and avoidance of pain etc.

      1. The continual choices and tradeoffs relating to these, are among the fibers of the story that defines us. Thanks again for the prod of thought. (Cynics are really good at that 🙂 )

  2. Regarding my above comments ~ This is funny ~ All along I thought I was commenting on a different piece of poetry on this site. Crazy. That I did this must be a perfect illustration of one of the top rules of stupid. 🙂

You can tell me anything (yes, even that!)
